General Questions
We're board-certified physicians who work as coaches - bringing medical expertise to understand your health conditions while using coaching strategies to help you actually implement lasting change.
As physicians certified in lifestyle medicine, we provide evidence-based guidance specific to your diagnoses. If you have diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or other chronic conditions, we help you understand what's actually happening in your body and recommend interventions proven to help.
As coaches, we help you figure out how to make those changes stick in your real life. We help you clarify your "why," identify barriers, build on your strengths, and develop sustainable habits that align with your values and goals.
What this means practically:
We help you truly understand your diagnoses and what's going on with your body
We can recommend specific labs to track your progress - you can get these through your PCP or through direct-to-consumer lab services
We help interpret lab results and adjust your plan accordingly
We provide disease-specific lifestyle guidance grounded in medical training
We don't prescribe medications - that remains your PCP's role
We use coaching tools like motivational interviewing, goal-setting, and values exploration
We recognize you as the expert on your own life - our role is to guide and support, not dictate
This combination is what makes lifestyle medicine so effective: you get clinical knowledge about what works for your specific conditions, plus the intensive support to actually implement it. We address both the "what" and the "how."
This is for residents of Pennsylvania (other states coming soon!) who are ready to take a proactive, empowered approach to their health. Whether you're managing a chronic condition, recently diagnosed with a medical condition that you want to address holistically, feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns, or simply wanting to feel better in your daily life- we're here to help you build lasting habits that align with your values and goals.
Our medical licenses are in the state of Pennsylvania. While we can offer coaching services anywhere, we want to provide all the helpful information and education that we can to those who are working with us. Providing diagnosis-specific health recommendations qualifies as the practice of medicine. Therefore, we can only work with residents of Pennsylvania.
However, as Pennsylvania has recently become a Primary Licensing State in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, we will soon be able to offer our services to residents in other states in the Compact as well!
We support a wide range of goals from preventing to treating and even reversing chronic disease, reducing stress, improving sleep, managing weight, increasing energy, or creating more balance and joy in your life.
No, that is not the role we serve. In fact, it is a requirement that you have a primary care physician. This is to make sure that you have a partnership with a physician that can see you for acute medical problems, as well as manage your medications. It is likely that if you are on medications right now, you will need to have your dosages reduced over time or may even be able to stop your medications through the lifestyle changes you are about to make. In certain cases, such as diabetes and hypertension, it is vitally important that your PCP is aware of the changes you are making. This is to avoid dangerous drops in blood sugar or blood pressure once you no longer require the dose of medications that you are currently on.
Special Offerings
Yes, this is in development. We plan to offer group sessions and workshops both for patients and the public. This will include some workshops which are open to people in any state and even globally.
Logistics and Practicalities
All sessions are virtual to allow flexibility and comfort.
No, we do not accept private insurance. This is an intentional choice that allows us to practice medicine the way we believe it should be practiced.
Here's why:
Insurance companies dictate how long appointments can be, what services are covered, and often require extensive documentation that takes time away from patient care. In a traditional insurance-based practice, doctors are often limited to 15-minute visits and pressured to see high volumes of patients. That's not personal or effective.
For the deep work of lifestyle change - understanding your story, exploring barriers, building sustainable habits - we need real time with you. Our model allows us to:
Spend 60-120 minutes per session focusing entirely on you
Provide intensive support between visits via email and text
Support you based on what you need, not what insurance will cover
Keep our practice small so we can truly know each patient
What this means for you:
The investment is $5500 for 6 months (or $3000 for the 3-month program), paid in monthly installments. While this is not covered by insurance, many patients find that the ability to reduce or eliminate medications, avoid future healthcare costs, and gain tools for lifelong health makes it worthwhile.
If you have Medicare or Medicaid or VA benefits, the answer to this question is No. You cannot send a bill to Medicare, Medicaid, or VA benefits for our services after you have entered our practice via a private pay agreement. See FAQs for Medicare, Medicaid and VA benefits below this FAQ.
I don't have Medicare or Medicaid. What about private health insurance?
You can submit an itemized bill or "superbill" to your private insurance provider to seek direct to you reimbursement for out-of-network benefits, if your private plan includes such coverage. However reimbursement is not guaranteed and subject to the review of your private insurance provider. The balance will remain your responsibility.
Whole Well Being is a self-pay private practice, which means we don’t bill insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid. Here’s how it works:
If you have Medicare or Medicaid, you can work with Dr. Laura Grangeia, who has opted out of Medicare and is not a Medicaid provider. This allows her to see you directly through a private-pay agreement. You both must agree that neither of you will submit bills/claims for this care to Medicare or Medicaid.
If you have Medicare or Medicaid, you unfortunately cannot work with Dr. Justin ("Jay") Stone, since he is an enrolled Medicare/Medicaid provider and is not able to see beneficiaries within this practice.
If you’re not enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid, you’re welcome to work with either Dr. Laura Grangeia or Dr. Justin ("Jay") Stone.
We know insurance rules can feel confusing. Our goal is to make it as clear and simple as possible so you can choose the provider that’s the best fit for you.
If you are a Veteran, you can work with either Laura Grangeia, MD or Justin Stone MD. However, you must do so under a private pay agreement that is not VA-financed care. In other words, you cannot submit bills to the VA as the VA has not given you preauthorization to work with us through their benefits. You would be responsible for payments out of pocket.
We can continue working together longer than 6 months!
Our hope is that you will feel empowered and confident to continue and maintain changes on your own in time.
Each person's journey is different, and we want to be of service to our patients in the way that best supports them, for the time that they need.
